Serpentine Road over Boka Kotorska Bay: A Road That Leads to the Clouds

#hellohalloween

If Kotor seems like a city by the sea from below, from above it's simply a sea spreading between the mountains. The serpentine road leading to the Lovcen Pass is one of those places where every stop turns into a viewpoint.

This road is known as the Kotor-Njeguši Serpentine Road. In 25 kilometers, there are 25 sharp turns and dozens of breathtaking views. With each turn, the city falls further below, and the bay begins to resemble a world map drawn by the sky.

📍 Where: The road connects Kotor and the village of Njeguši (Lovcen National Park, Montenegro).
🕐 When to go: In the morning, while the sun is mild and not too hot. In the evening, the serpentines become more challenging due to glare and fog.

How to get there

🚗 By car:
From Kotor, it's a 10-minute drive to the first serpentine turn. The entire drive to Njeguši takes about 40-50 minutes. The asphalt is good, but the turns are narrow, so passing is only possible at designated areas.

🚲 By bike or scooter:
This is possible if you have experience. The road is steep, with inclines of up to 10-12%. It's best to go early in the morning, before buses and tour vehicles arrive.

🚌 By excursion:
Tours to Lovćen Pass and the Mausoleum of Njegoš depart from Kotor and Budva. They usually include stops at viewpoints overlooking the bay. Prices start from €30-40.

☕ Tip: Stop at one of the viewpoints about halfway along the route—the entire bay is visible from there. And stop by the village of Njeguši to try homemade prosciutto and goat cheese.
