Huanglong Scenic Area

Located in Songpan County, Aba Tibetan and Qiang Autonomous Prefecture, Sichuan Province, it is renowned for its magnificent travertine landscapes and is hailed as a "fairyland on earth."

The scenic area is mainly known for the "four wonders" of Huanglong Valley—colorful pools, snow-capped mountains, canyons, and forests—plus its "seven wonders"—riverbanks, ancient temples, and folk customs. It is a World Natural Heritage site and holds the title of a national 5A-level scenic area.

Upon first seeing the Five-Colored Pools of Huanglong, I must say: "Except for the two most beautiful scenes on either side being travertine pools, everything else is unique!" The most beautiful travertine pool, the Five-Colored Beach, is over 3500 meters high.

The entire scenic area covers approximately 1400 square kilometers.

Visiting Huanglong used to be difficult, but now it's much easier. The Songpan High-Speed Railway Station opened two years ago.

It takes about 2 hours from Chengdu, followed by about 1 hour by taxi or shuttle bus, to reach the Huanglong Scenic Area Visitor Center, making a day trip to Huanglong possible—much more convenient than previous road trips.

Huanglong Scenic Area now also has a cable car.

If you take the cable car both ways,

you'll only need to climb about 300-400 meters to reach the Five-Colored Pools. Previously, you had to climb 4 kilometers of stairs to see the most beautiful Five-Colored Pools.

The main attraction is a winding, yellow calcium carbonate formation on the upper part of the mountain, resembling a giant yellow dragon lying in the snow-capped valley.

Huanglong is 3500 meters above sea level. Climbing it will leave you breathless, and your legs will be weak afterward. Although there are now cable cars and electric shuttle buses, you still need to climb a 340-meter-high boardwalk to finally enjoy the panoramic view.
