Sun Moon Lake is stunning, but if you're hoping for a sandy beach and swimming, the answer is: there’s no proper beach and swimming is generally prohibited—except during the annual Mid-Autumn Swimming Carnival. No designated swimming zones, lifeguards, or safety buoys. Lake waters are deep, with changing currents and important ecological controls. The lake is also a drinking water source, so on-site swimming is not allowed . Held each Mid-Autumn season (around September), it’s a 3 km open-water swim from Chaowu to Ita Thao pier.
