Pingjiang Road, 平江路 is one of the best preserved historical street in Suzhou, dating back to the South Song Dynasty. With water canals, bridges, old architecture and cobbled pathways, it retained the characteristics of the classical Jiangnan water village style. In 2005, the street received the Asia Pacific Heritage Award by UNESCO for Cultural Heritage Conservation. Pingjiang Road is pedestrian and narrow, but yet such a charming place to visit in the heart of old Suzhou!
What to do at Pingjiang Road 👇🏼
➡️ Walk along the road and appreciate the beauty of old Chinese architecture and water canals.
➡️ Go on a boat ride 🛶 I found it lovely that the oarsman also sings traditional songs whilst rowing the boat for tourists 🕊
➡️ Try the local cuisine! There are a lot of restaurants around with delish Suzhounese dishes 🍽 as well as local snacks.
➡️ Lots of shops for souvenirs and silk products! Jiangsu province is well-known for its silk production. During Ming and Qing dynasties, high quality products were crafted by silk weavers in Suzhou for royal families. You’ll definitely spot so many of the shops there selling silk dresses, scarfs… etc
➡️ Perfect place to capture glimpses of old China on 📸
How to go 👉🏼 Take metro to Lindun Lu, 临顿路or Xiangmen 相门 🚇 station (both on line 1). It’s located between these stations and takes about 10 mins by walk to reach from either.
