Yanshui, a once prosperous port town, is now famous for its annual "bee firecrackers", and the source of bee firecrackers is in this Yanshui Wu Temple with a history of more than 350 years. The main deity is Guan Yu, which is not only the local belief center, but also the focus of cultural heritage.
🏛️ The creation of the ancient temple and the reconstruction of multiple eras
• Legend has it that it began in the late Ming Dynasty, when a believer in Madou worshipped Guan Yu's portrait. The portrait was blown to the big banyan tree in Yanshui by a strong wind overnight and could not be retrieved. The local people believed it to be a miracle and built a temple in the 7th year of Kangxi in the Qing Dynasty (1668) to worship him.
• In addition to the creation, the temple was rebuilt during the Qianlong period, Jiaqing in 1803, Guangxu and the Japanese colonial period in 1917, and after the war in 1946, 1971 and 1983. The rear hall and garden were gradually expanded to maintain the magnificent appearance today. The three-story rear hall was rebuilt in 1983, and the Bee Firecracker Museum was established in 1997.
🎇 Beehive Fireworks and Temple Rituals: The Fiery Rhythm of Faith
• Beehive firework originated in the plague-ridden era of the late Qing Dynasty. The temple held a procession to set off firecrackers to ward off disasters, which has since become a traditional ritual of the Lantern Festival.
• Yanshui Beehive Fireworks is held from the 14th day of the first lunar month to the Lantern Festival. The firing of the cannon city is spectacular and has been listed as a religious 100 sceneries by the Ministry of the Interior and an international folk activity by the Tourism Bureau.
• The Wu Temple not only worships Guandi, but also Guan Ping and Zhou Cang. The rear hall has Guanyin, Zhusheng Niangniang, etc., and the Jade Emperor Hall on the 3rd floor gathers all the gods.
🌿 Cultural assets and cultural relics display
• The Wu Temple is a third-level historic site with a typical Fujian-style Sanchuanmen layout. It retains historical building materials such as painted beams and rafters, statues, incense burners, plaques, dragon-embracing-bead step stones, and ancient wood couplets.
• There is also a Wumiao Museum: the three-story building displays the history of beefire cannons, Guan Gong cultural exhibition, agricultural tools and daily utensils. It is free to visit and adds cultural depth. .
