Taishun is located in the mountains of southern Zhejiang. In ancient times, most of the villages were scattered among the mountains. Transportation is inconvenient, and sometimes it’s hard to find anyone even after walking for more than ten kilometers. Therefore, the ancients would build a bridge at a certain distance, with eaves on the bridge for passers-by to rest and shelter from the rain, and to protect the wooden bridge from wind and rain. This formed the Taishun Covered Bridge.
Taishun is known as the "Hometown of Covered Bridges in China". There are more than 970 ancient bridges preserved to date, including 32 ancient covered bridges, 15 of which are listed as national key cultural relics protection units. They are the "living fossils" of China's covered bridges. I explored two ancient covered bridges, which are also sister bridges, Xidong Bridge (founded in 1570) and Beijian Bridge (founded in 1674).
