This V-shaped canyon was formed over a long period of time by the rapid cooling of pyroclastic flows from Mt. Aso that flowed into the Gokase River.

The view of sheer cliffs with columnar joints stretching for 7km is breathtaking.

I'd heard the parking lot would fill up during peak season, so I arrived early from my lodging and was able to park in a nearby lot.
