Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route is a spectacular and scenic mountain route in Japan that traverses the Northern Japan Alps, connecting Toyama City in Toyama Prefecture with Omachi Town in Nagano Prefecture. It’s famous for its stunning landscapes, dramatic elevation changes, and unique transportation methods.
Key Highlights:
• Total Distance: About 90 km (56 miles)
• Elevation Gain: Up to 2,450 meters at Murodo, the highest point on the route
• Season: Usually open from mid-April to late November (varies slightly each year)
Major Attractions:
1. Snow Corridor (Yuki-no-Otani)
• Located near Murodo, this is one of the most iconic sights of the route.
• In spring (especially April–June), snow walls can reach up to 20 meters high.
• Visitors can walk along a path carved between the massive snow walls.
2. Kurobe Dam
• Japan’s tallest dam at 186 meters.
• Offers spectacular views, especially in summer and fall.
• There’s a walking trail along the dam and seasonal water discharges.
3. Murodo Plateau
• The highest point of the route and a great place for hiking, enjoying alpine scenery, and spotting wildlife like ptarmigans and snow grouse.
• Also features volcanic landscapes, hot springs, and sulfurous geothermal areas.
4. Tateyama Ropeway
• A scenic ride offering panoramic views of the alpine valleys.
