Toneri Hikawa Shrine in Adachi Ward, Tokyo
𓂃◌𓈒𓐍 𓂃◌𓈒𓐍𓂃◌𓈒𓐍𓂃
This shrine is said to have been founded in 1200 by inviting the deity Musashi Ichinomiya Hikawa Shrine in Omiya.
The shrine grounds are very spacious, and at the end of the long approach is a magnificent shrine building.
It was built in 1836, and the main hall is so magnificent that it is said to be one of the most beautiful sculptures in the ward.
It is usually covered by a fence, so you cannot see the details. This fence was built before the war, and it is clear that it has been cherished for a long time.
The chance to see the main hall up close comes once every 12 years, in the Year of the Dragon.
In 2024, it is a rare opportunity to see it only for two days, on 2/28 and 3/3.
The carvings, which were registered as a tangible cultural property of Adachi Ward in 1982, include a rising dragon, a descending dragon,
the slaying of Yamata no Orochi on the left side,
the descent of the heavenly grandson on the right side,
and the opening of the Ama-no-Iwato on the back... and other carvings based on mythology.
I was simply blown away by the extremely intricate carvings!
