Takachiho Shrine: The Birthplace of Mythology, Experience the Charm of Nature

Takachiho Shrine is located in Miyazaki Prefecture, Kyushu, Japan, and is an important birthplace of Japanese mythology. This place not only boasts magnificent natural scenery but is also where many deities in Japanese mythology were born.

According to the Kojiki and Nihon Shoki, the creation gods Izanagi and Izanami, after completing the creation of the earth, came to the present-day Takachiho area. Here, Izanagi washed his body in the Misogi Pond, and from his left eye was born the sun goddess Amaterasu, from his right eye the moon god Tsukuyomi, and from his nose the sea god Susanoo. These three deities are known as the 'Three Noble Children.' The town of Awasakihara is the birthplace of these three gods.

Another important mythological story is that Amaterasu hid in the Ama-no-Iwato cave due to the violent acts of her brother Susanoo, causing the world to fall into darkness. The gods eventually managed to lure Amaterasu out and sealed the cave with a large stone, bringing light back to the world. The Ama-no-Iwato Shrine is built on the stage of this mythological story, enshrining Amaterasu. Visitors can go to the Amano-Yasukawara, which is said to be the place where the gods discussed their strategy.

In addition to mythological relics, the Takachiho area also boasts magnificent natural scenery. The Takachiho Gorge was formed by the eruption of Mount Aso, and within the gorge is the Manai Waterfall, which is selected as one of Japan's top 100 waterfalls. Visitors can rent boats to get a close-up view of the waterfall's majestic power. There is also a trail about 1 kilometer long within the gorge, where you can enjoy sights such as the Yari-Tobi Bridge and the Oni-Hachiriki Stone.

Another must-visit attraction is the Takachiho Sky Train. This is a repurposed Takachiho Railway, where you can enjoy rural scenery and the magnificent view of the Takachiho Iron Bridge along the way. The most popular is the 'Ground Supercart,' which started operating in 2017, allowing passengers to see the tracks below through reinforced glass.
