Tokyo Travel

[REVIEW OF TOKYO TRAVEL – JAPAN BY YOURSELF]

I just had a 5-day, 4-night trip to Tokyo. This is my first time in Japan, and I feel like Tokyo is both bustling and modern, yet has peaceful, traditional corners. The streets are clean, the people are polite and extremely punctual.

PREPARATION BEFORE THE TRIP
• Apply for a Japanese visa (about 1-2 weeks).
• Airfare: I booked a round trip from Hanoi to Narita for about 12 million VND/person.
• 7-day JR Pass if you also go to Kyoto/Osaka, but you don't need it if you only go around Tokyo.
• Suica/Pasmo card for the train.
• Docomo SIM card purchased online and received at the airport.
• Prepare sneakers because you'll be walking a lot.

TRAVEL
• Tokyo has a huge metro system, but Google Maps is extremely accurate, just look it up and you'll find the line you need to take.
• If you go to Disney/DisneySea, you should buy a separate train ticket for the JR Keiyo line.

PLAY AND CHECK-IN PLACES
• Asakusa – Sensoji Temple: old town, Kaminari-mon Gate, Nakamise area with souvenir shops.
• Shibuya: the most famous intersection in the world, Hachiko dog statue.
• Harajuku – Takeshita Street: fashion paradise, cute snacks.
• Shinjuku: bustling nightlife area, with Tokyo Metropolitan Government building with free access to the observation deck.
• Tokyo Skytree: the tallest tower in Japan, overlooking the entire city.
• Disneyland/DisneySea: should spend a whole day.

EAT
• Sushi Dai at Tsukiji market – the queue is a bit long but worth it.
• Ramen Ichiran – famous for its separate seating concept.
• Udon, soba at restaurants near the train station.
