If you want to experience tradition in Tokyo, Sensō-ji is highly recommended!
Sensō-ji, established in 628, is the oldest temple in Tokyo and is considered a central hub of popular faith in Japan.
The temple was founded after two fishermen discovered a statue of Kannon, the Goddess of Mercy, while fishing in the Sumida River. During the Edo period, Tokugawa Ieyasu designated it as a prayer temple for the shogunate, leading to its prosperity. The magnificent 'Kaminarimon' (Thunder Gate) with its giant lantern and statues of the wind and thunder gods guard the entrance. The main hall, five-story pagoda, and numerous cultural treasures make it an excellent place to experience history and tradition.
The serene backdrop makes for stunning photos, which is another highlight!
Every year, approximately 30 million people visit Sensō-ji, with a significant number coming for Hatsumode (the first shrine visit of the New Year).
Located near the bustling Asakusa district, it harmonizes with traditional markets, festivals, and street performances, making it one of Tokyo's iconic tourist destinations.
You can enjoy a stroll through traditional scenery and the lively shopping streets, and its proximity to the station makes it highly accessible.
