Chao Chao Gyoza Ginza
Not sure how famous this gyoza restaurant is, but from my experience, it’s really good. This place is all about gyoza—everything on the menu revolves around gyoza, even the desserts. It’s delicious.
Forget the image of large gyoza that you have to eat in big bites. Here, the gyoza are bite-sized, making them easy to eat. As mentioned, this is a gyoza-focused restaurant with a wide variety of fillings to choose from. They even indicate which fillings don’t contain garlic, which is great for those who are concerned about lingering smells. I couldn’t try everything because I was too full, so I only picked the ones I really wanted to eat.
I’ll share the menu so you can see the variety of fillings they offer. The basic gyoza dishes are served in a connected sheet, cooked with water poured over them during the frying process. The crispy edges are a highlight and taste amazing, even though it’s a simple dish. The filling isn’t overly abundant, but it feels just right. The gyoza wrappers are chewy and soft.
The restaurant offers gyoza in various styles: grilled, fried, and boiled. If you order them separately, they come in sets of three. I also tried the fried gyoza with chicken and cheese filling, served with a pinch of salt for dipping. It was savory and creamy, perfect for cheese lovers like me.
Another dish I tried was fried shrimp gyoza served in a light clam soup. The shrimp gyoza were crispy, and the soup was refreshing and mild, with no garlic to worry about, as stated on the menu.
The chicken wing gyoza is another standout. It’s like a fried chicken wing stuffed with gyoza filling. If you love fried chicken wings with crispy skin and a flavorful filling, you must try this.
One thing I appreciated about this place is their gyoza sauce. Normally, I’m not a fan of the salty and tangy traditional gyoza sauce because I feel it overpowers the gyoza. Here, they offer miso-based sauces, both spicy and non-spicy. I loved the spicy one, which reminded me of chili paste but with a rich, savory miso flavor.
For dessert, of course, it had to be gyoza. The chocolate-filled gyoza is perfect for those with a sweet tooth like me. It’s lightly grilled and served with an optional scoop of ice cream for extra indulgence.
Overall, this is a place I’d definitely revisit. There are still so many items on the menu I haven’t tried yet.
The restaurant’s name is quite long: "Naniwa Hitokuchi Gyoza Chao Chao Ginza Korido-ten." Please correct me if I got it wrong. But if you’re searching on Google Maps, just type "Chao Chao Gyoza." There are two branches close to each other in Ginza.
