The Banpo Museum, located in Xi’an’s Baqiao District, is China’s first museum dedicated to prehistoric settlements. Established in 1958, it preserves the Banpo archaeological site, a Neolithic village dating back approximately 6,000 years to the Yangshao culture. The site spans about 50,000 square meters and features remnants of residential dwellings, pottery kilns, a burial ground, and defensive trenches, offering insights into early agrarian life and matriarchal clan society.
The museum comprises two exhibition halls and an excavation site hall. Exhibits include over 10,000 artifacts such as stone tools, pottery, bone implements, and decorative items. A highlight is the painted pottery basin featuring a human face and fish design, emblematic of Banpo artistry.
