Indawgyi Lake

Indawgyi lake is Myanmar’s largest lake about 4 hours drive southwest from Myitkyina. The area has only recently opened for tourism. Foreign tourists can stay in Lonton which has two basic motels, no wi-fi. Both of them are situated at the lake. The only option for eating is at local restaurants/stalls. Food is very simple but safe.

Indawgyi lake is a beautiful area with plenty of birds, including pelicans, hornbills, storks, vulture, bulbul etc. The highlight of the trip was the sighting of a gibbon at the northern tip of the lake.

Visitors should not miss the beautiful Indawgyi Environmental Education Centre presenting the wildlife of the lake, with voice recordings of its various birds, its people and offering various trips. The Education Centre has a lovely big terrace where one can relax and watch the lake life going by while drinking good local coffee. Some local handicraft products, gifts and organic rice can also be purchased here. A visit to the center is a must! 😊 Staff speaks good English.

Tip: A smooth trip to Indawgyi lake requires planning.

End of April when we were there visibility over the lake was not that great.
