Yangzhou Slender West Lake is formed by the ancient Sui and Tang Grand Canal water system and the city moats of different eras such as Sui, Tang, Song, Yuan, Ming, and Qing dynasties. The basic existing layout of Slender West Lake was established during the Kangxi and Qianlong periods of the Qing Dynasty. Slender West Lake is a typical small shallow lake, with its source water coming from the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal. Slender West Lake belongs to the Yangzhou section of the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal water system and is a tributary of the Yangzhou section of the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal. The Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal was the main north-south waterway transportation route in ancient China. The Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal starts from Beijing, passes through Hebei, Tianjin, Shandong, Jiangsu, and Zhejiang provinces and cities, and reaches Hangzhou. It connects the five major water systems of the Hai River, Yellow River, Huai River, Yangtze River, and Qiantang River, with a total length of nearly 1800 kilometers.
