Coming back from Yantai, the impression is lasting! This severely underestimated treasure of a coastal city perfectly blends ethereal myths and legends, pristine blue coastlines, incredibly fresh seafood, and a trendy, influencer-friendly vibe. If you also long for a coastal trip that's both romantic and down-to-earth, where you can take beautiful photos and feast to your heart's content, Yantai is definitely worth it! Keep this freshly compiled guide & notes handy!
✨ Core Impression: Purely blue, powerfully fresh!
Yantai's "blue" is ingrained in its DNA! The sky is a clear azure, and the sea boasts layered shades of jelly blue and emerald green; especially on sunny days, it's unrealistically beautiful. The "freshness" is a carnival for the taste buds; seafood during the fishing season is unbelievably cheap, and the cherry season fills the streets, allowing for fruit freedom!🔥 Must-Visit Experiences & Popular Spot Reviews:1. Yangma Island: Self-drive/cycle around the island to find the "Jelly Sea" and "Little Maldives" Popular spots: Zhangdao Scenic Area (crystal clear water), Lotus Sunset (popular cave photo spot), Qinfeng Cliff (for sunset views, check in at the white horse sculpture). Everywhere on the island is a scenic spot; riding a scooter or driving around the island, stopping anywhere for photos will yield stunning shots! The sea water is truly as clear as jelly; go on a sunny day, and it's absolutely breathtaking! It's recommended to go in the afternoon and stay until sunset.
Tips: Renting a car/scooter is most convenient for island tours; check tides for popular cave photos (safe during low tide); Sunscreen! Sunscreen! Sunscreen! There's little shade on the island.2. Fisherman's Wharf: Step onto the "Spirited Away"-style sea track Popular spot: The "Spirited Away"-style track entering the sea (locate the sea behind "New Era Hotel")! It's recommended to come in the evening; the golden glow of the sunset on the sea and European-style buildings creates an amazing atmosphere. There are many people queuing for photos, but it's worth it! The entire wharf complex is also very photogenic, like a European town.
Tips: The track is more visible at low tide; light-colored or bright clothes look better in photos; there are good cafes and restaurants nearby.3. Chaoyang Street: A collision of history and trend A century-old street with a new look! Buildings adorned with wine elements, cute panda walls, artistic shops, unique restaurants, and bars line the street. It's suitable for photos during the day (the Changyu Wine-themed decorative wall is recommended), and even more atmospheric when the lights come on at night. It's right at the foot of Yantai Mountain, so you can plan to visit both together.
Tips: Look for hidden photo spots, such as the building covered with little bears; you can buy local specialties like Yantai dried apples.4. Yantai Mountain: Climb high to view the sea and international architecture A landmark attraction, surrounded by sea on three sides. Climb the lighthouse (10 RMB) for an unbeatable panoramic view of Yantai city and the azure sea! On the mountain, there are former consulates of various countries, rich in historical ambiance, with lush trees providing shade, making it very pleasant for walks.
Tips: The lighthouse is worth climbing; wear comfortable shoes; allow about 2-3 hours for your visit.5. Golden Beach: The Lonely Whale & Fine Sand Popular spot: The "Lonely Whale" sculpture (navigate to "City Exhibition Center")! The giant whale stranded on the beach is full of storytelling and artistic flair, whether at sunrise, sunset, or on cloudy or sunny days, making for incredible photos! Golden Beach has soft, fine sand and a long coastline, perfect for playing in the sand and wading in the water.
Tips: To photograph the whale without people, try to go early in the morning or in the evening; pay attention to the tides, as the effect is different when the whale is surrounded by water at high tide; bring a pair of slippers for easy sand play.6. Penglai Pavilion & Sanxian Mountain: In-depth Fairyland Culture Tour If you have ample time (1 day recommended), Penglai is highly recommended! Penglai Pavilion is one of China's Four Great Towers; climbing it for a distant view makes the legend of mirages feel almost real. The nearby Eight Immortals Crossing the Sea Scenic Area has unique designs, great for photos. Sanxian Mountain Scenic Area is a magnificent classical garden, with pavilions, towers, and treasure collections, offering a visual feast, much loved by elders and Hanfu enthusiasts.
Tips: Penglai is about a 1.5-hour drive from Yantai city center; you can book a day tour or go by car/high-speed rail; Sanxian Mountain Scenic Area is quite large, so allow enough time.🍽️ Yantai on the Tip of Your Tongue: A Burst of Freshness! Seafood Paradise: The fishing season (after September) is prime time! Must-try: Sea cucumber with rice (Yantai specialty!), braised mixed fish, steamed/salt-and-pepper mantis shrimp, various shellfish (oysters, scallops, mussels), and mackerel dumplings! Buying fresh seafood at the market and having a restaurant process it is also very affordable. Shandong Cuisine Flavors: Try authentic Penglai noodles (for breakfast), Fushan noodles, and braised sea cucumber with scallions. Fruit Freedom: May-June is cherry season! Big, sweet, and cheap cherries (varieties like Meizao, Hongdeng) fill the streets, making cherry freedom a reality! Yantai apples are also very famous. Snack Night Markets: Yanda Snack Street (a gathering place for university students, lively and with many choices), Nanhong Street. Yangma Island and Golden Beach are some distance from the city center (about a 30-50 minute taxi ride).
