Tianmen Temple will be one of the attraction that falls in the intersection between the west and east loop. It was originally built during the Tang Dynasty and has served as a major Buddhist center in western Hunan for over a thousand years. Although the original structure was destroyed over time, the current temple, rebuilt in 2009, still carries a strong sense of historical depth and sacred atmosphere.
The temple is full of fascinating stories. For example, in the rear hall, there is a stone tablet engraved with the words “There is heaven beyond heaven,”( 天外有天) and surprisingly, the back of the stele contains ancient medicinal prescriptions from the Ming Dynasty, left by the abbot during the reign of Emperor Wanli.
Built in the traditional Qing Dynasty architectural style, the temple features red walls, green glazed tiles, and flying eaves that rise majestically on the summit of Tianmen Mountain. The Heavenly King Hall, Grand Buddha Hall, and Guanyin Pavilion are arranged along the mountain slope, displaying an impressive architectural layout, which I thought can rival China’s most iconic ancient pavilions.
The most sacred treasure here is the relic of Buddha Shakyamuni stored in the Sutra Repository Hall (need to go to second level of 藏经阁)There are only five such relics in the entire world, and Tianmen Mountain Temple is one of the rare places where you can see it with your own eyes—truly a blessing. The temple frequently holds chanting and blessing ceremonies, where the rhythmic sound of Buddhist hymns brings profound peace to the mind.
Surrounded by dense forest, the air is incredibly fresh. Tall ancient trees stand guard around the temple, and a seven-tiered pagoda is hidden within the greenery, adding to the tranquility. Walking through the temple grounds, listening to Buddhist scriptures, and being far removed from the noise of the city, one feels spiritually cleansed.
📌 Note:
- Temperatures on the mountain can be quite low – bring something warm.
- The temple is a sacred spiritual site. Please remain quiet and respectful of religious customs and culture when visiting.
