This self-driving tour lasted 51 days from October 9 to November 28, covering a distance of 8,780 kilometers. Departing from Shanghai, the tour will pass through Quzhou, Zhejiang; Zhuzhou, Jiangxi; Zhijiang, Hunan; Maotai Town and Chishui, Guizhou; Luzhou, Zigong, Chengdu, Dujiangyan, Wenchuan, Lixian, Ma'erkang, Jinchuan, Danba, Xinduqiao, Litang, and Daocheng, Sichuan; Shangri-La, Lijiang, Jianchuan, Shaxi, Dali, Weishan, Chuxiong, Kunming, and Dongchuan, Yunnan; Panzhou, Qianxinan, Ziyun, Duyun, and Qiandongnan, Guizhou; Loudi, Hunan; Fuzhou, Jiangxi; and Quzhou, Zhejiang, before returning to Shanghai. The reason why Dujiangyan Scenic Area gives preferential treatment to Shanghai residents may be related to Shanghai’s support for the reconstruction of Dujiangyan City after the Wenchuan earthquake.
This is the fifth time I have come to pay homage to the great water conservancy project Dujiangyan. I still feel that I have technology, culture, faith and spirit.
The surging Minjiang River flows towards Chengdu City, irrigating the Eastern Plains and fertile the Tianfu Kingdom.
The construction structure and principle of Dujiangyan:
The Dujiangyan water conservancy project is built on the bend of the Minjiang River, so that the river water in the bend flows into the head of the Dujiangyan canal. The head of the canal is composed of three parts: Yuzui Dike, Baopingkou and Feisha Weir.
The water-dividing fish mouth embankment was built in the middle of the river and is shaped like a half moon. The water of the Minjiang River flows down the curve, the water surface widens, the water speed slows down, and the water hits the fish mouth dike that divides the water. The water of the Minjiang River is divided into the Inner River and the Outer River. The water from the Inner River flows into the Baopingkou and can be used to irrigate the Chengdu Plain. It is the main water source in Western Sichuan. The Inner River finally merges into the Yangtze River in Chengdu.
Baopingkou is like a bottleneck, controlling the amount of water flowing into the Minjiang River into the Chengdu Plain, preventing excess water from flowing into the outer river through Feishayan. The Waijiang River is used for sand discharge and flood discharge, and then merges with the Qingyi River and flows into the Yangtze River.
The inner river of Dujiangyan is located on the concave bank, while the outer river is located on the convex bank. Therefore, according to the principle of curved circulation, the centrifugal force generated by the curved movement of water in the bend causes the surface river water to flow to the concave bank and the bottom river water to flow to the convex bank. Therefore, most of the sand and gravel will flow to the outer river with the bottom water flow. Then the vortex momentum generated by the water in the curved river hitting the bottom will again drain the sediment flowing into the river through the Feisha Weir. The removal rate of sand and gravel will increase as the intensity of the flood potential increases. In addition, the Inner River and the Outer River divide water according to a ratio of 40 to 60. Because the river bed of the Inner River is low, 60% of the river water will flow into the Inner River during the dry season, providing irrigation and shipping water for the Chengdu Plain. When the summer flood season comes, 60% of the river water will be released into the outer river, and 40% of the river water will flow into the inner river, thus protecting the Chengdu Plain from floods.
The water diversion Yuzui Dike, Feisha Weir and Baopingkou of Dujiangyan Water Conservancy Project cooperate and echo each other, integrating water diversion, flood discharge, sand discharge, flow control and other links, perfectly realizing the functions of Dujiangyan irrigation, flood control and water use. At the same time, since Dujiangyan is about 730 meters above sea level and Chengdu Plain is about 430 meters above sea level, this difference creates a slope drop of 3‰ to 6‰, which can realize gravity irrigation in the vast area around Dujiangyan.
However, the Yuzui Dike, Feishayan and Baopingkou are not the entire Dujiangyan water conservancy project. In addition to the canal head, Dujiangyan also includes 19 canal systems including the Neijiang main canal, Qingshui River, Tuojiang River, Tongjiyan, and Sanheyan, 37 main canals, 60 branch canals with a total length of 3,550 kilometers, and 272 main canals with a total length of 3,627 kilometers. branch canals, 2,848 bucket canals with a total length of 11,847 kilometers, and 34,868 agricultural canals with a total length of 23,172 kilometers, covering a total land area of approximately 21,700 square kilometers, and a total irrigation area of 13.7 million acres.
Dujiangyan, of such a large scale, is the oldest and only preserved damless water diversion project in the world. It embodies the wisdom and diligence of the ancient Chinese people and becomes a miracle of ancient Chinese water conservancy engineering that dominates the Minjiang River. What is even more surprising is that the construction of Dujiangyan did not cause damage to the natural environment and resources. Instead, it took advantage of the characteristics of the natural environment where it is located to seek advantages and avoid disadvantages, so that man-made and nature can be harmoniously blended, demonstrating the designer's unique natural philosophy.
The Dujiangyan Water Conservancy Project also contains many outstanding technologies and creations of the Chinese nation. The unique engineering technologies used in the construction of the project, such as "枎槎", "bamboo cage", "dry-laid cobblestone" and "sheep pen", as well as water control experience such as "drawing out the center when the situation is right, cutting off the corners when encountering the bay", "deep shoal, low construction weir", have been widely used in flood control work in the Yellow River and Pearl River basins. The ancient Dujiangyan, not only has not been reduced to a historical relic, but it still plays a huge role in future generations and benefits the people.
