The Wanfo Pagoda, located in the center of Mengcheng County, Anhui Province, is a landmark building in Mengcheng County. It derives its name from the nearly ten thousand small glazed Buddha statues embedded within and around the pagoda. While not very large, the pagoda boasts a beautiful form, varied structure, and excellent preservation. Constructed using northern brick pagoda construction techniques, it represents a fusion of pagoda-building techniques from both northern and southern my country, making it a significant Song Dynasty pagoda.
The Wanfo Pagoda is an octagonal, 13- story brick pagoda, considered the highest-ranking Buddhist pagoda. It stands 42.2 meters tall, with a base length of 24.8 meters. Doors are located on the four front sides of the pagoda, while false windows are built into the remaining four sides. A through-the-center staircase leads to the seventh floor, while spiral staircases extend from the eighth floor onwards.
Two steles commemorating the pagoda's construction remain within the pagoda: one on the fourth floor, dated 1102 , the first year of the Song Dynasty's Chongning reign; the other on the eleventh floor, dated 1106. Judging from the time interval between the two inscriptions, four years passed between the fifth and eleventh floors. The pagoda, with a total of thirteen floors, took approximately ten years to build, including the foundation and the finials.
