Introducing Overlord Temple

The Overlord Temple, also known as Dingting, Xiangwang Pavilion, Xiangwang Temple, Yinghui Temple, Xiang Yu Temple, and the Western Chu Overlord Temple, is located on Phoenix Mountain on the southeast side of Wujiang Town, He County. It was built to commemorate the Western Chu Overlord Xiang Yu who committed suicide by slashing his own throat in the Wujiang River. It is bordered by the surging Yangtze River on the left. It is the place where the Western Chu Overlord Xiang Yu was defeated at Gaixia and retreated to the Wujiang River where he committed suicide.

Historical records indicate that at its peak, the Overlord Temple boasted 99 and a half halls, chambers, wings, and rooms, and enjoyed continuous worship for a thousand years. During the Ten Years of the Great Depression, the temple was razed to the ground and converted into a rural middle school. Following the Cultural Revolution, the He County government allocated funds for its reconstruction and expansion in 1984 and 1992 .

Today, upon entering Wujiang Town, visitors can see the memorial archway of the " Overlord Shrine ," inscribed by the great Ming Dynasty calligrapher Dong Qichang, and the jade-stone Hanque Gate. Central to the shrine is the Hall of Worship, where a 2.6 - meter - tall bronze statue of Xiang Yu stands. He appears arrogant and headstrong, imposing and fierce, his eyes glaring as if to express the tragic hero's desperate demise: " Heaven has doomed me, not my military campaigns. "
