Shihezi, located on the southern edge of the Junggar Basin in Xinjiang, is a city selected, designed, and built by military personnel. Originally mostly Gobi desert, Shihezi, through the efforts of generations of military settlers, has transformed its mountainous and hilly areas into lush pastures, home to abundant water and grass and a bounty of "military-style" Merino sheep. Other areas have also been transformed from former wastelands, reed lakes, and alkaline flats into fertile farmland, earning it the nickname "Pearl of the Gobi." With a green coverage rate of 42%, Shihezi has been designated a "City with Improved Human Settlements" by the United Nations.
