Zhuxian Town in Kaifeng County, Henan Province, lies 20 kilometers south of Kaifeng City. Along with Foshan in Guangdong, Jingde in Jiangxi, and Hankou in Hubei, it is one of my country's four major commercial ports. Legend has it that during the Warring States Period, it was the hometown of Zhu Hai, who resided in Xianrenzhuang, hence the name Zhuxian Town. Zhu Hai was originally a butcher, but due to his exceptional bravery, he was hired as a guest by Lord Xinling. He later made significant contributions in the campaigns to repel Qin, rescue Zhao, and preserve Wei. Therefore, Lord Xinling's unparalleled fame is inseparable from his discovery and appointment of Zhu Hai.
Zhuxian Town reached its peak during the late Ming and early Qing dynasties. At that time, the town covered 25 square kilometers, boasted a population of over 200,000 and over 40,000 civilian and commercial households. The town boasted a network of streets and a diverse array of department stores. The Jialu River divided the town into East Town and West Town. East Town was an important market street during the Ming and Qing dynasties. After the Qianlong Emperor's reign, the town suffered frequent floods due to the Yellow River overflowing its banks. Since East Town is located at a lower elevation, many merchants moved to West Town.
Zhuxianzhen woodblock New Year paintings originated in the Tang Dynasty, flourished in the Song Dynasty, and reached their peak in the Ming and Qing Dynasties. With a long and rich history, they are considered one of my country's four major woodblock New Year paintings. Yue Fei once defeated the Jin army here, achieving a great victory in Zhuxianzhen. Yue Fei once achieved a feat of defeating 100,000 Jin soldiers with only 500 elite cavalrymen, prompting Jin Wushu to lament, "It is easy to shake a mountain, but difficult to shake Yue Fei's army."
The warm temperate humid monsoon climate makes it suitable for travel in all four seasons.
Zhuxian Town in Kaifeng, Henan Province, is one of China's four famous ancient towns. Zhuxian Town's woodblock New Year paintings are the forerunners of Chinese New Year paintings and one of China's oldest traditional handicrafts. Originated in the Tang Dynasty, flourished in the Song Dynasty, and reached its peak in the Ming Dynasty, they feature bold and unrestrained lines, vivid and moving plots, rich and symmetrical compositions, vivid and simple images, and rich and intense colors. They are highly decorative and possess distinct local characteristics.
