The Baishuihe National Nature Reserve is located in Pengzhou City, on the northwestern edge of the Sichuan Basin, 70 kilometers from Chengdu. It covers a total area of 301.5 square kilometers. Located between longitude 103º41′-103º57′ east and latitude 31º10′-31º29′ north, it is a forest and wildlife nature reserve.
Baishuihe National Nature Reserve is the closest national nature reserve in Sichuan to the provincial capital Chengdu, which is dedicated to protecting rare wild animals and plants such as giant pandas and biodiversity.
The Baishuihe National Nature Reserve has a humid subtropical climate. Influenced by topography and altitude, its climate exhibits the following characteristics: There is a significant vertical temperature variation, forming a mountain vertical climate zone, which, from low to high altitude, is divided into: northern subtropical, mountain warm temperate, mountain intermediate temperate, mountain cold temperate, and mountain subarctic. Precipitation is abundant, concentrated, and often heavy. Solid precipitation predominates in winter, with annual precipitation reaching 966.9 mm and annual evaporation around 980 mm. Rainy days are frequent, sunshine is scarce, and humidity is high. Annual sunshine hours range from 1,300 to 1,400 hours, and the annual frost-free period is approximately 278 days. The maximum and minimum temperatures in the area range from 29.8°C to 5.1°C, respectively. The annual average temperature is 12.3°C, with accumulated temperatures above 0°C ranging from 4,000 to 5,000°C. The annual average temperature drop rate in the mountains is 0.6°C per 100 meters. The climate in the area is suitable for growing edible bamboo, which is suitable for giant pandas.
The reserve is located in the transition zone from the Sichuan Basin to the western Sichuan Plateau. It has complex and diverse terrain, well-preserved forest vegetation, beautiful natural landscape and rich biodiversity.
There are about 10 giant pandas in the area, with a habitat area of nearly 10,000 hectares. The reserve is the southernmost distribution point of the Minshan B population of giant pandas. It connects the Jiudingshan, Longxi-Hongkou and other giant panda reserves geographically, connecting the giant panda habitats in the southern section of the Minshan mountain range. It plays an important role in promoting genetic exchange among giant panda populations and stabilizing and developing the giant panda population.
The reserve is also one of the source areas of Tuojiang River, an important tributary of the Yangtze River. It has extremely important scientific value and strategic significance in conserving water sources in the surrounding areas of Chengdu and downstream areas, maintaining water and soil, protecting rare wild animals and plants and biodiversity, and maintaining ecological balance.
