Qingdao Catholic Church, originally named St. Michael's Church on Zhejiang Road, Qingdao Catholic Diocese, was designed by German architect Johann Sebastian Bloha in Gothic and Romanesque styles. The planned church was to be 100 meters tall, but the outbreak of World War II forced Germany to prohibit the outflow of domestic capital, forcing the church to be revised and completed to its current size. The church tower stands 56 meters tall, making it the tallest building in Shandong Province before the founding of the People's Republic of China.
The church houses a priceless pipe organ imported from Germany, which is played only during Sunday Mass. The church is spacious and bright, with a hall 18 meters high and two confessional booths on either side of the aisles for priests to receive confessions from believers.
