Baopu Taoist Temple is located on Geling Mountain on the north bank of West Lake in Hangzhou. Geling gets its name from the fact that Ge Hong, the founder of Taoism in the Eastern Jin Dynasty, once lived here and practiced alchemy. Geling Mountain borders Baoshishan Mountain to the east, Ziyun Cave to the west, West Lake to the south, and Huanglong Cave to the north. Baopu Taoist Temple stands at the center, surrounded by lush mountains and reflected lake light.
The outer wall of Baopu Taoist Temple follows the undulating terrain of the mountain, resembling a swimming yellow dragon, earning it the nickname " Dragon Wall . " It is one of the temple's scenic spots. Beside the courtyard lies the Alchemy Well. Next to the Square Pavilion stood the Alchemy Platform ( now buried ) . The original main hall has collapsed due to disrepair. Atop the ridge stands the First Balcony. Formerly known as Geling Chaokan ( one of the Eighteen Scenic Spots of the West Lake ) , it was where the ancestor Ge Hong observed the sun and moon.
The main hall of Baopu Taoist Temple is Gexian Hall, which houses a statue of Ge Hong. To the east of Gexian Hall stands Hongmei Pavilion, a unique and exquisitely designed pavilion exemplifying the ancient courtyard style of southern China. The carved woodblock print gallery within Hongmei Pavilion houses dozens of paintings and calligraphy by renowned figures throughout history. More recently, Yuanchen Hall was built to the east of Gexian Hall, featuring sculptures of renowned Taoist figures.
