Xixing Ancient Town, located on the south bank of the Qiantang River, has a history dating back to the Spring and Autumn Period. Fan Li, a high-ranking official from the State of Yue, built a fortress here to repel the Wu invaders. It was then called Guling, later renamed Xiling and remains so today. Although Xixing is part of Hangzhou's riverside district, it's closer to Shaoxing in both architecture and style.

Xixing, while called an ancient town, is actually comprised of just two streets and a river port. Xixing Old Street abuts the East Zhejiang Canal, with residential buildings facing the water from their back doors and a riverside pier. It's a vibrant place, unspoiled by excessive commercial development.

This is a place that most Hangzhou locals don’t know about. The ancient town has ancient bridges such as the House Bridge, Cang Bridge, and Zifu Bridge built in the Ming and Qing Dynasties, which span the canal. It has small bridges, flowing water, houses, white-washed walls and black-tiled streets, and typical characteristics of a Jiangnan ancient town.
