The West Lake Museum is located on the west side of Nanshan Road, south of the Qianwang Temple, and adjacent to the West Lake to the west. It is the only museum in Hangzhou known as the " Window of West Lake " . The museum integrates four major functions: exhibition, West Lake studies, West Lake literature and information, and tourist services.

The building extends largely underground, seamlessly blending into the surrounding lake and mountain scenery. Extensive use of steel-framed glass allows for optimal daylighting, creating a simple yet dynamic building with a strong contemporary feel.

The West Lake Museum's exhibition halls encompass six chapters: an introductory hall, an overview of West Lake, the formation of its landscape through the ages, the inscribed landscapes of West Lake, West Lake culture, and its spiritual home.
