Shen'ao Village, located at the northern foot of Tianzigang on the south bank of the Fuchun River in Tonglu County, is surrounded by lush green mountains and beautiful natural landscapes, with the Fuchun River just across the river. Originally built during the Southern Song Dynasty, the village retains its original layout and style, and is designated a Nationally Renowned Historical and Cultural Village.
Shen'ao Ancient Village, a ancestral village of the Shentu family, is renowned in Tonglu for its ancient culture, rich history, unique geographical location, and preserved cultural relics. It comprises four ancient villages: Shen'ao, Dipu, Xufan, and Huanxi.
Shen'ao Village boasts over 140 ancient buildings from the Ming and Qing dynasties , and over 60 from the Republican era . These buildings, while simple in appearance, are elegant in spirit, boasting exquisite carvings. The well-preserved Ming dynasty water system holds considerable scientific and cultural value, with some open ditches, culverts, and wells still in use.
With over a thousand years of history, Shen'ao is imbued with an ancient charm . Its architecture blends Huizhou-style architecture with traditional western Zhejiang dwellings, with most existing components dating from the mid-Qing Dynasty to the Republic of China period. The predominant structure is composed of three- and four-sided houses, characterized by diverse courtyard arrangements, a simple exterior, and elegant interiors. The interior carvings feature distinct themes, reflecting the cultural and social characteristics of Shen'ao over different periods. The Jiushi Hall and Rulin Hall are the oldest buildings.
