
Hangzhou Buddhist Academy, located in Zhongtianzhu Fajing Temple at No. 112 Tianzhu Road, Xihu District , is the only comprehensive Buddhist art college in China approved by the State Administration for Religious Affairs with a full range of disciplines.
The college aims to cultivate talented Buddhist temple administrators who are patriotic, love Buddhism, prioritize both learning and practice, and possess a strong sense of historical mission and social responsibility, as well as monks who are interested in pursuing research and creation in Buddhist theory and art. It currently comprises two secondary colleges, the Faculty of Theology and the Faculty of Arts, and a research institute.
The Faculty of Theology offers a comprehensive curriculum, enabling students to gain a comprehensive understanding of the fundamentals of Buddhism and the theories of various schools over four years of study. Courses offered include Chinese Buddhist History, Indian Buddhist History, Vinaya, Madhyamaka, Yogacara, Tiantai, Huayan, Zen, Pure Land Buddhism, Pramana, and Politics.
The Academy of Arts focuses on Buddhist painting, calligraphy, sculpture, and other artistic creations, complemented by courses in Buddhist theory and traditional culture. Featuring specialized teaching, the program offers a comprehensive curriculum that integrates traditional and modern elements. The program offers three majors: Chinese Figure Painting, Chinese Landscape Painting, and Chinese Flower and Bird Painting.
