Visit the volcanic craters and admire the unique landscape shaped by volcanic eruptions. Explore the natural hot springs and hike the scenic trails around the park. Be sure to visit the volcanic museum to learn more about the geological significance of the area.

The Leiqiong Haikou Volcanic Cluster World Geopark is located in Shishan Town, southwest of Haikou City. It is a graben-rift type basic volcanic activity geological relic and one of the few dormant volcanic clusters in China that has experienced volcanic eruptions in the Holocene (10,000 years ago). It has extremely high value for scientific research, popular science and tourism.
According to geologists, volcanic eruptions in northern Hainan began in the Early Tertiary Period of the Cenozoic Era, with the last eruption occurring approximately 13,000 years ago during the Holocene Period of the Quaternary Period. Despite the vicissitudes of time and the transformations of the earth, 36 cup-cone crater structures remain. Among them, the Ma'anling Crater, at 222.8 meters above sea level, is one of the highest peaks in northern Hainan. The main geological remains comprise a Quaternary volcanic complex of 40 volcanoes. The volcanic complex is diverse and encompasses nearly every type of basaltic eruption, including clastic cones, lava cones, and mixed cones formed by magma eruptions, as well as maar volcanoes formed by the interaction of magma and groundwater. The volcanic landscape is extremely diverse, with lava flows—encrusted lava—becoming breathtaking in their rope-like, twisting, and coral-like shapes.

The Leiqiong Haikou Volcanic Cluster World Geopark is a UNESCO Global Geopark and is one of the best-preserved volcanic sites in the world. It contains over 40 volcanic craters, lava tubes, and basalt columns, offering significant insights into volcanic activity and the region's geological history.
The geopark is located in Haikou, Hainan Province. It is accessible by taxi or private car. Public buses and local transport services are available, but renting a car or taking a taxi is the most convenient option for visiting the park.
The park is typically open from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM. The best times to visit are in the cooler months, from October to March, to avoid the intense heat and humidity of summer.
Entrance fees vary depending on the specific areas of the park you wish to visit. Generally, tickets cost between 50 to 100 RMB. Tickets can be purchased online or at the entrance of the park.
It is recommended to book tickets in advance, especially during peak tourist seasons (holidays or weekends). You can book tickets up to a few days before your visit.
A visit to the geopark typically takes about 3 to 5 hours, depending on how much time you spend exploring the volcanic craters, hiking trails, and exhibits at the museum.
The must-see highlights include the volcanic craters, the "Lava Sea" area, the volcanic basalt columns, and the Haikou Volcanic Museum. Don’t miss the unique hot spring areas and panoramic views of the surrounding landscape.
Guided tours are available in both Chinese and English. Audio guides can be rented in several languages, including English, and are a great way to learn about the park’s geological features.
The best viewpoints are near the top of the volcanic craters, offering sweeping views of the surrounding area. The basalt columns and the hot spring areas also provide fantastic photo opportunities.
Start by visiting the Haikou Volcanic Museum to understand the geological significance of the park. Then, take a guided tour or explore the volcanic craters, hot springs, and lava formations. Finish your visit with a relaxing time at one of the natural hot spring areas.
Currently, the park does not offer night visits or light shows. Special tours may be available during certain seasons or for groups, such as educational or eco-tours.
The park can get crowded during weekends and holidays, particularly in the summer. To avoid crowds, visit on weekdays or during the off-peak months (October to March).
Facilities include public toilets, water stations, rest areas, and souvenir shops selling local crafts and volcanic-themed items. Food can be found at the park’s café or nearby restaurants.
The park is generally accessible, though some hiking trails may be challenging for elderly visitors or those with mobility issues. It is recommended to check for specific accessibility information at the park entrance.
Mobile payments (e.g., WeChat Pay, Alipay) and credit cards are widely accepted throughout the park, making it convenient for most visitors. However, it is a good idea to carry some cash for smaller purchases.
Inside the park, there is a café offering snacks and drinks. Nearby, you will find local restaurants serving Hainanese specialties such as Hainan chicken rice and coconut rice.
Vegetarian options are available in most restaurants in the area, though vegan and halal options may be more limited. It is advisable to check with the restaurants in advance for specific dietary needs.
Several hotels are located near the park, including the Hainan Marriott Hotel and Haikou's various mid-range and budget accommodations. There are also boutique hotels offering a more local experience.
Other attractions near the geopark include the Hainan Tropical Wildlife Park and Botanical Garden, Dongzhai Harbor Mangrove Forest, and the Haikou Missionary Church. All are within a short drive and can be easily included in a day trip.
Souvenir shops inside and around the park sell volcanic rock-themed items, local crafts, Hainanese tea, and other regional specialties like coconut-based products.
After visiting the park, taxis, buses, and rental cars are the best options for continuing your trip. The park is well-connected to Haikou’s city center, and other tourist destinations in Hainan are accessible by road.
