Hongmen Palace, also known as Taishan Red Gate Palace, is located northwest of Wangmu Pond at the southern foot of Mount Tai, between Tai'an City, Licheng County, and Changqing County in Shandong Province. It serves as the starting point for climbing Mount Tai and is named after two red gates on the northwest cliff that resemble doorways.
Hongmen Palace is located north of Daizong Archway, at the northern end of Hongmen Road. It faces Zhongxi River to the east and Dazangling Mountain to the west. The palace is named after a red stone gate-like structure on the Lingnan Cliff. Its founding date is unknown, but it was rebuilt during the Ming and Qing dynasties. The temple is divided into two courtyards: the Maitreya Courtyard in the east and the Hongmen Palace in the west, connected by the Feiyun Pavilion. The main hall of the east courtyard originally enshrined a wooden Maitreya Buddha, but was destroyed in 1966. To the east is a hall-like changing pavilion, where emperors and officials once changed their clothes before climbing the mountain; it is now used as a teahouse. To the south is a hall-like courtyard. The west courtyard houses the Yuanjun Temple. Its main hall originally enshrined Yuanjun, the Goddess of Life, and Grandma Yanguang; it now houses a bronze statue of the Nine Lotus Bodhisattva. To the west is the Qiezhi Pavilion, now a photography studio showcasing Mount Tai scenery. To the south is a hall-like tea pavilion. Behind the main hall are the meditation courtyard and east and west ancillary rooms. Feiyun Pavilion originally enshrined Guanyin Bodhisattva; it is now a viewing platform.
The high pavilion between the two courtyards is called the Feiyun Pavilion. Beneath the pavilion is an archway through which a mountain climbing path leads. The entire palace is adorned with verdant holly and vibrant peonies, a vibrant hue of red and green, imbued with an ancient charm. Looking out, one can take in the panoramic views of Tai'an. Each morning, the sun illuminates the hillside, creating a magnificent scene known as Mount Tai's "Red Gate at Dawn."
It has a temperate continental semi-humid monsoon climate with distinct four seasons, moderate cold and hot seasons, synchronized light and temperature, and simultaneous rain and heat. Spring is dry and windy, summer is hot and rainy, autumn is sunny and refreshing, and winter is cold and snowy.
