Nanwan Monkey Island, located on the Nanwan Peninsula, approximately 14 kilometers south of Lingshui County, Hainan Province, is surrounded by the sea on three sides. It is the only island-based macaque nature reserve in my country and the world. Over a thousand macaques, totaling 21 groups, currently live on the island, earning it the nickname "Monkey Island."
Nanwan Monkey Island, with its long and narrow shape, mild climate, diverse flora and fauna, and 95% forest coverage, is an ideal habitat for macaques. Dense broadleaf forests and shrubs abound, and the island boasts fragrant flowers and fruits year-round, beautiful scenery, and a pleasant climate.
In addition to the macaque sanctuary, Monkey Island also has clean and charming beaches, colorful coral reefs, tall and colorful coconut trees, a natural beach with white waves, the "Tonglou Fishing Fire", one of the eight scenic spots of Guling Water, and the fishing raft style known as the "street market on the sea", which guarantees that your trip will be worthwhile.
The best time to watch monkeys is from late October to early February, when the female monkeys are in estrus. During this time, the strongest monkeys in the group will challenge the Monkey King to a duel for the queen. The winner becomes king, while the loser flees or submits in submission. It's endless fun.
Since the scenic area is located on the peninsula, if you want to enter Monkey Island, you can choose to take the sightseeing cable car directly to the scenic area, or take a boat to the peninsula's pier and then take the scenic area's sightseeing bus to Nanwan Monkey Island. The journey time is about 8-10 minutes.
