Introducing Chengbei Hall

Chengbei Church, located at 363 Desheng Road , Jianggan District, Hangzhou, was founded by the Southern Presbyterian Church in 1881. Missionaries Ms. Ge and Ms. Fu purchased several houses between Zuojia Bridge and Hongshiban in Hushu and established a meeting place for their evangelism. They also built a simple clinic and elementary school.

The new Chengbei Church features a small auditorium on the ground floor and a barrier-free driveway at the east entrance. The second floor houses a 350- square-meter chapel, with a one-meter-high altar on the south side. The altar is framed by a large red and white beech paneling, affixed to the paneling is a red bronze cross, a sacred Christian symbol. The third floor houses a stepped chapel and prayer room.

The main facade of the church features four eight-meter-tall leaf-shaped floor-to-ceiling windows, imbued with a strong religious atmosphere. The floor-to-ceiling light and shadows reflect the architect's meticulous manipulation of natural light. A balustrade, inlaid with vase-shaped columns, is located at the church's waist and roof. A 10- meter-tall bell tower rests on the church's roof.
