Introducing Gege Mansion

Located on Gulou South Street in Tianjin, the Gege Mansion consists of two quadrangles and is a typical Qing Dynasty residential building. Its first owner was the Heshuo Gege's residence in Tianjin during the reign of Emperor Guangxu of the Qing Dynasty, hence the name Gege Mansion.

The Heshuo Gege, whose real name was Yu Deling, was born in 1886. Her father, Yu Geng, was a Qing Dynasty envoy to Japan and France, and her mother was French. Yu Deling lived abroad with her father from a young age, becoming fluent in eight languages and diplomatic etiquette. In 1903, at the age of 17, Yu Deling returned to Beijing with her father and became the translator for Empress Dowager Cixi. She was highly regarded by the Empress Dowager and was granted the title of Heshuo Gege.

In 1904, Yu Deling accidentally learned that Empress Dowager Cixi intended to marry her off, so she sought refuge in Tianjin and later in Shanghai. In 1907, she married Thaddeus White, the American Vice Consul in Shanghai, and followed him to the United States, where she pursued writing. During the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression, Yu Deling participated in patriotic activities abroad. She died in a car accident in Canada in 1944.

Time passed, and in 2009, the Gege Mansion welcomed a new owner, Ms. Zang Xiuyun, a wealthy Hong Kong businesswoman born in Tianjin. She invested heavily in its renovation and established the Tianjin Gege Mansion Museum, showcasing over 200 precious artifacts she had amassed over the years, including over 30 Chinese artifacts purchased from around the world. The collection dates back to the Shang and Zhou dynasties and continues into modern times, a truly remarkable achievement.
