Introducing White Sands Crater

The Baisha Meteorite Crater, located in Baisha Farm, 9 kilometers southeast of Yacha Town, has a diameter of 3.7 kilometers. It is the first meteorite crater discovered in my country, formed by the impact of an asteroid approximately 700,000 years ago. The ridge surrounding the crater is relatively continuous, with only a gap on the southwest edge caused by erosion by two streams. The Baisha Meteorite Crater is the only relatively young meteorite crater currently identified in my country and one of more than a dozen meteorite craters worldwide with meteorite fragments.

The Baisha Meteorite Crater holds many mysteries and mysterious phenomena. For example, on the west side of Ejianling, where the sputtering layer is thickest, watches can become magnetized, and cameras can automatically shut down and stop working, but return to normal after leaving the area. Hainan's Baisha Meteorite Crater not only contains meteorites, but also boasts distinct crater topography, impact-induced rock metamorphism, and shatter structures. Compared to meteorite showers, the crater offers a richer array of features, making it a rare, surface-level space tourism resource.

Today, within the crater, one sees lush greenery. Tea trees line the gentle slopes, creating a vibrant landscape. It's hard to imagine the earth-shattering scene of a meteorite impact 700,000 years ago, shattering and melting rocks and spurting magma. Scientists have discovered meteorite fragments within the crater, among them typical minerals found only in meteorites. The meteorite is an achondrite, a perfectly round, oblate spherical asteroid weighing 3.75 kilograms and possessing a hard texture. This is the only such discovery in China.
