The Mysterious Black Valley is located in Dongguoyuan Village, 7.5 kilometers east of Jixian County. It covers a total area of 8,000 mu (approximately 1,000 acres) and stands at an altitude of 540 meters. Its highest peak is Niangniangding. According to folklore, the Dongguoyuan area within the scenic area was once the private orchard of An Lushan during the Tang Dynasty. During the Tianbao period of the Tang Dynasty, An Lushan served as the governor of Pinglu, Fanyang, and Hedong, and resided in Yuyang. He built an official residence within the city and constructed Xiongwucheng (Hsiungwu City) to the east to store grain and fodder. He also claimed the Dongguoyuan area as his private orchard.
