Jiefang North Garden, formerly known as Victoria Garden, is located at the intersection of Tai'an Road and Dagu North Road. Built in 1887 and covering over 9,000 square meters, it is a renowned historical garden in Tianjin. The two stone lions in front of the hexagonal pavilion are over 100 years old, approximately 1.3 meters tall and weighing approximately one ton. They possess immense historical and cultural value, and their economic value is inestimable. According to the cultural relics department, these stone lions are classified as Class III national cultural relics and are protected by national law. They have become a symbol of Jiefang North Garden.
The two stone lions originally belonged to Gordon Hall, a British Concession-era building north of present-day Jiefang North Park, built in 1887. In the early 1970s, the original Gordon Hall was demolished to make way for the new city hall building, and the two stone lions were moved to Jiefang North Park, where they remain today. In 2010, the two stone lions, weighing over a ton, vanished overnight. Within a month, police traveled back and forth across the province to solve the case. After a month's absence, the stone lions finally returned home and were reinstalled.
