Introducing Shell Bank

Tianjin Shell Reefs, known locally as "Clam Reefs," "Shalingzi," or "Shell Reefs," are a rich reservoir of marine shells along the coast of Tianjin. They contain dozens of shell species, arranged in layers and stretching for dozens of kilometers. Shell Reefs are located in eastern Tianjin, including Jinnan, Dagang, and Tanggu.

The Tianjin Ancient Shell Reef, along with the St. Louisiana Shell Reef in the United States and the Suriname Shell Reef in South America, is considered one of the world's three largest ancient shell reefs and holds a significant position in international Quaternary geological research. Four shell reefs, I, II, III, and IV, are arranged from land to sea within the Tianjin Land Deposition Plain. These reefs, arranged discontinuously in a ridge-like pattern roughly parallel to the modern coastline, represent the locations of the coastline during four different periods. A sea transgression between 10,000 and 5,000 years ago inundated much of the Tianjin Plain. Subsequently, the sea level receded, and rivers deposited alluvial deposits, gradually forming land.
