The Yuanmaoli modern building complex is located in Shanzi Alley, Shangcheng District, Hangzhou. It was built in the 1930s and invested by Shen Maoli, the owner of a Shanghai construction company. It consists of three parallel buildings, typical of Hangzhou's modern Shikumen houses, divided into lanes one, two and three, with a total of more than 20 Shikumen units.
A mixture of Chinese and Western styles: the overall terraced layout and decorations such as escalators, capitals, and railings mostly use Western patterns, but its courtyard-style unit structure and the main decorations on door frames and eaves are in the style of traditional Chinese residential architecture.
