Licun Miao Village, located in the suburbs of Sanya City, Hainan Province, is home to Hainan's most primitive indigenous people and epitomizes the customs and culture of the Li and Miao people. The village boasts a quaint, tranquil environment, rich in pastoral charm. Within the village, lush and robust coconut trees, towering areca palms, slender and graceful bamboo, robust and sturdy palm trees, and lush, broad-leaved fan palms create a quintessential tropical atmosphere.
Visiting a Miao village allows you to experience their warmth, song, dance, and craftsmanship. They love to joke with visitors from afar. You might find yourself being pulled into their hut by a Li girl amidst the flowers, becoming their makeshift bridegroom, or being pulled over by a Miao girl to dress her in traditional clothing for a photo. If you have the chance, try the bamboo pole dance to experience their unique culture. While much has been commercialized, taking home a piece of authentic handmade Li brocade or Miao batik makes a wonderful souvenir.

These villages are significant for their well-preserved traditions, cultural practices, and their unique approach to farming and weaving. Li Village and Miao Village are located in the mountainous areas of Sanya, Hainan. They are best accessed by taxi or private car from Sanya city, as public transport options are limited. It’s also possible to arrange a guided tour which often includes transportation.
The villages are open year-round, but the best times to visit are during the cooler months from November to April. The villages are less crowded and the weather is more comfortable for outdoor activities. It’s advisable to visit during the daytime, especially in the mornings, when cultural activities and tours are often scheduled.
There is generally no entrance fee for visiting Li Village and Miao Village, but some special cultural performances or activities might have an additional charge. Tickets for such activities can be purchased on-site or through tour operators.
Booking in advance is recommended if you want to attend special performances or take part in cultural activities. Booking 1-2 days before your visit should be sufficient. For general visits, advance booking is not required.
To fully explore both villages and participate in activities, allocate 2-4 hours. If you're interested in attending performances or experiencing crafts in detail, you may spend up to half a day.
Guided tours are available in Mandarin and sometimes in English. These tours offer in-depth knowledge of the local culture and history. Audio guides may also be available for self-guided exploration, depending on the operator.
Start with a walking tour through the village to see traditional houses and the lush surrounding landscapes. Afterward, visit the local workshops to witness the creation of handicrafts. Finally, enjoy a cultural performance or try local dishes at a nearby food stall or restaurant.
Night visits are not typically available. However, cultural performances are often scheduled in the evenings, providing a unique opportunity to experience the vibrant traditions of the Li and Miao people after dark.
While the villages are popular with tourists, they are generally not as crowded as more well-known attractions in Hainan. The least crowded times to visit are on weekdays during the off-season (November to March), especially in the mornings.
Basic facilities like toilets are available at the village entrance. There are also small food stalls offering local snacks and drinks. However, there are limited shops for souvenirs, so it’s a good idea to bring water and snacks, especially if you plan to spend a lot of time exploring.
The village paths are somewhat rugged, and certain areas might be challenging for elderly or disabled visitors. However, the main paths can be navigated by children and those with moderate mobility. It’s best to inquire locally for assistance or guided tours for those with special needs.
Cash is preferred for most transactions, particularly in the villages. Mobile payments like WeChat Pay and Alipay may be accepted in some shops in Sanya city but are less common in the villages themselves.
Vegetarian and halal options are available in nearby restaurants, especially in Sanya city. In the villages, most food tends to be based on local meats and seafood, but vegetarian meals can be requested.
Local markets near the villages offer handmade Li and Miao textiles, including embroidered clothing, jewelry, and woven baskets. Coconut shell crafts and wooden carvings are also common souvenirs.
After visiting the villages, taxis and private vehicles are the best way to continue your journey. For longer trips, car rentals or tour groups can help you explore other areas of Hainan more conveniently.
