Guoyun Thatched Cottage, located to the west of Hangzhou Xinxin Hotel, was built in 1913 by Liu Tiqing, the son of Liu Yong, a wealthy man from Nanxun, Huzhou . It is a semi-Romanesque, three- story , three- bay Western classical building with a red dome. It is also the first large Western-style building on Beishan Street and is listed as a provincial cultural relic protection unit.
After the founding of New China , Liu Tiqing's fellow villager Zhu Jiahua came to Hangzhou to serve as the chairman of Zhejiang Province. The two Western-style buildings, Guyun Thatched Cottage and Xinxin Hotel, became the guesthouses of the Provincial People's Government.
