The Hangzhou Foreign Customs Site, also known as the Hangzhou Customs Site and the Hangzhou Customs and Taxation Office, is located within the Hangzhou Second People's Hospital and is now used for medical purposes. After the Opium War, foreign powers established commercial ports along China's riverbanks and established customs offices to inspect and collect tariffs on foreign ships and their cargoes. Hangzhou Customs was one of these " foreign customs offices . "
The former site consists of three red brick buildings with double-eaved roofs, typical of traditional Eastern architecture. The first and second floors are designed with British-style " vaulted corridors . " A " New Customs " boundary marker stands in front of the customs office , and 40 boundary stones surround the site , each engraved with the words " Hangzhou Customs 1896."
