Gao Family Garden is located in Hangzhou's Gongshu District, northwest of Gongchen Bridge and bordering the Grand Canal to the east. Built in the early years of the Republic of China by Gao Yicheng, a relative of late Qing Dynasty minister Li Hongzhang and former manager of the Tongyi Cotton Mill's new company, it is the only intact Qing Dynasty building and private garden in Hangzhou.
The Gao Family Garden covers an area of approximately 1,200 square meters and comprises a long corridor, a pond, a nine-curve bridge, rockery, and the Nanhua and Airi Buildings. The main building, the Nanhua Building, is a two-story, five-bay, loft-style building with a hip roof, constructed in a Chinese and Western style. The garden also features unique rockery, trees, birdlife, a fish pond, and a variety of flowers and plants.
