The Nie Shicheng Martyrdom Memorial is located at the intersection of Zijinshan Road and Jinyan Highway in Nankai District. It features a 2.4-meter-tall granite base with a central stele. The front of the monument is inscribed with "The Place Where Nie Zhongjie Was Martyred." The flanking columns are inscribed with the words "Brave and heroic, reminiscent of those days when he lay wrapped in battle hide, his heart audacious and brave, soaring across the raging sea; his loyalty shed its blood, yet today, the three armies endure the ravages of insects and sand, their bones etched in mournful songs of Yuefu, fighting south of the city." The horizontal banner reads "Awe-inspiring." Before its restoration in 1984, the inscription on the monument contained only the seven characters "The Place Where Nie Zhongjie Was Martyred."
Nie Shicheng (1836-1900), courtesy name Gongting, was a native of Beixiang, Hefei, Anhui Province (present-day Nie Ancestral Hall, Gangji Town, Changfeng County), and a Qing Dynasty general. His father died young, leaving him with his mother in poverty. A lover of chivalry and righteousness from a young age, Nie Shicheng later joined the army, embarking on a forty-year military career. He participated in the suppression of the Taiping Rebellion, the Sino-French War, the First Sino-Japanese War, and the Boxer Rebellion, achieving remarkable military success. He was killed by artillery fire during the Battle of Tianjin during the Boxer Rebellion. The Qing court posthumously awarded him the title of Grand Tutor to the Crown Prince and the posthumous title of Loyalty and Integrity.
