Introducing Wanshou Mountain

Wanshou Mountain, a remnant of the Yanshan Mountains, was once used as a fodder for imperial horses in the early Qing Dynasty. In the 15th year of Emperor Qianlong's reign, to celebrate the Empress Dowager's 60th birthday, Yanshou Temple was built on the site of Yuanjing Temple. The following year, the mountain was renamed Wanshou Mountain. Kunming Lake was later developed, making it the central feature of the Summer Palace. To the west lie the Five-sided Pavilion and the bronze Baoyun Pavilion. Behind the mountain stands the magnificent Tibetan Buddhist structure of the Four Continents and the multicolored glazed Multi-Treasure Pagoda, towering amidst the lush greenery. The mountain also boasts a variety of pavilions and terraces, including the Jingfu Pavilion, Chongcui Pavilion, Xieqiu Pavilion, and Huazhongyou, representing a truly remarkable display of classical Chinese garden architecture.

Longevity Hill was even featured on the obverse of the first set of RMB 20 notes, issued in July 1949. A visit to the Summer Palace is a must-see for a panoramic view of the entire park. It's the highest and best vantage point on Beijing's north-south central axis. From this vantage point, you'll be filled with admiration and delight at the beauty of our motherland.
