The Western-style Building Scenic Area, located in the northeast corner of Beijing's Old Summer Palace Ruins Park, is China's first replica of a European-style garden. It comprises over ten buildings and gardens, including the Harmonious Garden, the Linear Bridge, the Thousand Flowers Array, the Bird Cage, the Square Gate, the Hall of Sea Tranquility, the Yuanying Pavilion, the Great Waterworks, the Water Viewing Pavilion, the Linear Hill, and the Linear Wall. The well-known broken stone pillars, a feature of the Yuanying Pavilion and the Great Waterworks, have become widely known for their uniquely imperfect beauty, becoming a symbol of the Old Summer Palace.
The Western Building was built in the Baroque style of the late European Renaissance, with Le Notre-style gardens. The massive white marble piles clearly demonstrate the building's former grandeur. Today, only a few ruins remain, and we can only contemplate the building's former splendor.
