The Shanghai Theatre Academy, located on Huashan Road in Jing'an District, Shanghai, is a renowned art school in Shanghai and a leading arts institution in China dedicated to cultivating theatre professionals. Formerly the Shanghai Municipal Experimental Drama School, it was founded on December 1, 1945, by renowned educator Gu Yuxiu and renowned dramatists Li Jianwu, Gu Zhongyi, and Huang Zuolin, with Xiong Fusi as its first president. In October 1949, the Shanghai Experimental Drama School was renamed the Shanghai Municipal Drama College. In 1952, as part of the nationwide restructuring of higher education institutions, the Drama Department of the Art Department of Shandong University and the Drama Group of the Shanghai Xingzhi Art School were incorporated into the academy, officially establishing it as the Central Academy of Drama, East China Branch. In 1956, it was officially renamed the Shanghai Theatre Academy, a higher arts institution directly under the Ministry of Culture. In April 2000, it was transferred to a joint venture between Shanghai and the Ministry of Culture. In June 2002, the former School of Performing Arts of Shanghai Normal University, Shanghai Opera School, and Shanghai Dance School were merged into the Shanghai Theatre Academy.
