The Dongtan Migratory Bird Reserve is an important stopover for migratory birds on the East Asia-Australasia Flyway. It plays a key role in protecting migratory bird populations and preserving wetland ecosystems. The reserve helps maintain biodiversity and serves as an educational resource for environmental conservation.
Dongtan Migratory Bird Reserve is located in Chongming Island, Shanghai. To get there, take a bus or taxi from the city center to the island, or use the ferry services from Shanghai to Chongming. Once on the island, taxis and buses are available to reach the reserve.
The reserve is open daily from 8 AM to 5 PM. The best time to visit is during the migratory bird season, typically from October to March, when you can observe a variety of birds. Early mornings or late afternoons are the best times for birdwatching.
The entrance fee is generally around 50 CNY per person. Tickets can be purchased on-site at the reserve’s entrance or through local tour operators.
Advance booking is not necessary for general entry, but for guided tours or special events, booking in advance is recommended, especially during the peak birdwatching season (October-March).
To fully explore the reserve and enjoy the birdwatching areas, expect to spend 2 to 4 hours. If you’re part of a guided tour or plan to visit multiple observation points, you may need more time.
Guided tours are available in Mandarin and sometimes in English during peak tourist seasons. Audio guides are not provided, but on-site guides offer in-depth information about the birds and ecology of the area.
Start at the main entrance, explore the birdwatching trails, and then head to the observation towers for a wider view of the wetlands. If you have more time, visit the bird-watching areas further along the reserve.
Night visits and light shows are not available at the Dongtan Migratory Bird Reserve. However, special birdwatching tours during peak migratory periods may be offered. These typically take place during the day.
The reserve is usually not crowded, but weekends and holidays can attract more visitors. The least crowded times are on weekdays, especially during the morning hours.
The reserve is relatively accessible for elderly and children, though some areas along the trails may require walking on uneven terrain. It is recommended to check with the reserve for any special accommodations for disabled visitors.
Cash is accepted, but mobile payments such as Alipay and WeChat Pay are widely accepted for entry fees, souvenirs, and purchases at the reserve.
There are no restaurants or cafes inside the reserve itself, but nearby towns and Chongming Island offer various local dining options, including seafood restaurants and eateries serving traditional Chinese cuisine.
Many local restaurants offer vegetarian options. Halal food is also available on Chongming Island, especially in areas with a larger Muslim population.
There are no major souvenir shops within the reserve. However, nearby towns may have shops offering local handicrafts, bird-related items, and traditional Chinese souvenirs.
After visiting, the best way to continue your trip is by taxi or bus back to Shanghai. Public transport options, including buses and ferries, are available to take visitors back to the mainland.
