The Inner Mongolia Museum is located on Xinhua East Street, Xincheng District, Hohhot City, Inner Mongolia. The original Inner Mongolia Museum was a key project for the 10th anniversary of the establishment of the autonomous region in 1957.
It is the only comprehensive museum at the autonomous region level in the region and one of the earliest museums established in ethnic minority areas in the country. It was listed in the history of world architecture as early as the 1950s.
It faces east and sits west. The main building is tall, with lower side corridors. A prancing white horse symbol is adorned the roof. The museum is divided into four sections: 1. Inner Mongolia Revolutionary Relics; 2. Inner Mongolia Paleontology and Paleoanthropology; 3. Inner Mongolia Ethnic Relics; and 4. Inner Mongolia Historical Relics.
Cultural relics from ethnic minorities such as the Xiongnu, Donghu, Wuhuan, Xianbei, Turkic, Khitan, Jurchen, Dangxiang, and Mongolian account for a significant proportion of the collection. Among these, rare treasures include Xiongnu crowns and belt ornaments, Xianbei noble step-shaking crowns, Han Dynasty gilt and agate horse ornaments, and pearl-encrusted dragon robes. The museum's artifacts possess distinct ethnic and local characteristics.
